Fine line arrow on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black outline of an arrow runs lengthwise along the forearm, with an open diamond-shaped head, a small triangular barb, dots spaced along the shaft and a feathered tail. The linework is fine and even, with no shading or fill. The ink is black on pale skin against a white textured background, and the arrow sits centrally across the arm.

Dear Maren,

The relay on Halden Post went down again on the third day of the dust season, so this letter will sit in the buffer until a courier skiff comes through the ring. I am writing it by hand on the back of an old survey chart, because paper is the only thing up here that doesn't need power to keep its shape.
You asked why I keep the arrow sketch pinned above my bunk. The first surveyors marked every waymark with a shaft and fletching, and the dots along the shaft are the stations we logged between here and Orrin's Reach, nine of them, each one a day's burn apart. The diamond head points the way the flat sky tilts, which is hard to explain unless you've spent a winter steering by it.
Last week the arrow stopped agreeing with the stars. Ostra recalibrated twice and got the same answer: the head pointed toward the Reach, but the feathers pointed back at Cairn Nine, the station the ledgers say was lost in the ice storm forty years ago. She went out in a suit with a hand lamp and found the marker still standing, its shaft bent but every dot still in place.
So I am not coming home yet. I am going to walk the nine stations backwards with that lamp, counting them aloud the way Grandmother counted knots on the quay, and I will send you the count when the relay wakes. Keep the kettle on for me.
Your loving brother, Tobiah
