Below me the ballroom floor was still under dust sheets, and the wind off the front kept lifting the corner of the canvas as if it wanted to see what I was doing.

Doreen came out of the side door with two teas and stood under me, shading her eyes. She had run the Saturday waltzes since before the war and knew every name on the old board. 'You'll want a stop after the G,' she said, 'or it'll read like a cough.' I told her I had been painting letters since I was fourteen, and she said that was exactly why she was watching.

By noon the new letters stood out wet and bright against the cream, and I found I had been finishing every stroke with a small flick of red at the tip, a habit from my teacher that I never quite lost. Doreen read the word aloud, slowly, the way you read a dance card. Then she climbed the second rung herself, which she had never done in forty years, and pressed her thumb to the wet R to see if it would hold.

It held. On Saturday the doors opened at seven, and the first couple through were already dancing on the steps. I stayed up the ladder with the tin lid under my arm and watched the hall's light spill across the pavement, my letters glowing on the glass, while Doreen waved her tea towel at me from the doorway as if I were the one who needed looking after.
