Fine line arrow tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single black arrow runs along the inner forearm, with chevron fletching at the tail and a small ornate arrowhead at the tip. The shaft is a thin dotted line broken by small circles, and the linework is delicate and even. The photo is taken at close range against a white top and a leopard print garment, with the wearer's face outside the frame.

The oven ticked up to temperature at ten to four, and Gwen was late again, her bike light sliding over the wet yard as she wheeled in. She didn't apologise. She pointed instead at the chalkboard by the proving cabinet, where someone had drawn a red line from the word RYE to the word FRIDAY, finished with a neat little arrowhead. She said it was hers and I shouldn't rub it out.

I didn't. Dad used to draw those arrows on every order slip so the night shift knew which tin went on which van, and for two winters after the funeral nobody had dared. I dusted the bench with a sieve of white flour and ran a finger down its middle, leaving a dotted line of pale marks that broke every few inches where I tapped the sieve against my palm.

Gwen rolled out the seeded batch without looking up. You still think he was fussy about scoring, she said. He wasn't. He wanted the top to tell you where the loaf had been. She had taken his old curved lame out of its tin and sharpened it, and she held it out to me handle first.

I cut one long stroke down the crown of the last loaf, then two shallow slashes at the back like feathers. The sky over the car park was still black. I carried the loaf to the window, where the first van lights were turning in, and set it down to cool with the arrow pointing at the door.
