Fine line cross on the back of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black cross with a small looping ornament along its upright sits on the back of a person's neck, shown from behind with dark hair pulled back. The linework is delicate and even, with the vertical stroke extending past the crossbar and a cross-shaped detail near the top. The tattoo is in black ink only, set against light skin and a blue hooded top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fog came down on the Hallow Ford just as Ysolde reached the middle, and for a while she could see nothing but the rope running back into the grey, tied to her wrist at one end and to the bank at the other. Her grandmother had twisted that cord from nettle fibre the winter the river took the mill. Every arm's length there was a loop knotted into it, so a walker could count their way across without looking down at the water.

She counted. Seven loops, eight. At the ninth the current pulled at her knees so hard she nearly let go, and she thought of the old woman's voice telling her that a cord only holds if the one holding it keeps her hand closed. Ysolde closed her hand. The tenth loop was further than she remembered, and the eleventh was gone, rubbed through against the rocks, so she had to feel for the twelfth with cold fingers.

On the far bank a stake of ash stood with a crossbar lashed to it, the mark the ferrymen set up to say the crossing was safe. She tied the cord to the upright, wound it three times around the foot, and left it there for whoever came after into the fog. When the sun came through the next morning the rope still hung from the stake, and a miller's child was counting its loops aloud.
