Small fine line cross on the back of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small upright cross is drawn in thin black linework on the back of a person's neck, centred below the hairline. The lines are clean and even, with no shading, and the cross is set in a simple, open area of skin. The black and white photograph shows a hand with a ring holding the hair aside, and a plaid shirt collar at the bottom of the frame.

Ilse had crossed the Hessel pass for eleven winters without needing a marker, because the snow always showed her the way. This year it did not. The wind came off the col in a flat grey sheet, and by noon the cairns that had guided her since girlhood were gone under white, as if someone had smoothed a cloth over the mountain.

She had brought a hammer wrapped in rag, a fistful of iron nails, and a length of pine she'd split the night before. Her brother Anton had argued for a post tall enough to see from the hut, but she made hers no taller than her forearm, because wood was scarce and the light was going. She drove the upright into a crack in the saddle rock and lashed the crossbar with wire until her fingers stopped answering her.

Piet Brandt came over the col at dusk with his string of mules, cursing the cold and the lack of sense in anyone who would build a shrine in a gale. Then he saw the small dark shape against the drifted stone and turned his animals toward it without another word. Ilse stood beside the cross until the last mule passed, watching the lantern bob down the far side into the valley.

In April the thaw uncovered the cairns again, grey and lopsided as ever. Ilse's cross was still standing, its wire gone the colour of rust, and someone had hung a tin cup from the crossbar. She left it there.
