Heartbeat line and heart on the neck
Fine line · Neck · Mixed · Photo
The photo shows the back of a person's neck with dark hair pulled up, and no face is visible. A thin black outline forms a heart on the left, shaded with red and orange, which connects to a heartbeat trace running across to the right. The composition is centred on the neck with the skin around the tattoo slightly reddened.

Day forty-one out of Valparaíso, and the swell has finally let the galley fire go out long enough for me to write properly. The captain thinks I am keeping a tally of rations. I am keeping a tally of the boy from the Azores who has not yet stopped coughing, and of the mate who laughs too loud at dinner to hide his hands shaking.

This morning I sat with the Azorean's mother's letter, the one she gave me at the quay with a pressed scrap of lace folded inside. She had drawn a line on the paper, a little wandering scratch of ink, and beside it a heart. She said that when the priest at São Miguel had listened to her son's chest as a babe, the old man had told her the rhythm was a song only she could hear. I asked her what the song sounded like. She could not say. So she drew it.
I have tacked that drawing above my bunk, between the barometer and the chart of the Horn. Every time the ship lurches I put my finger on the line and count. The peaks rise and fall where they ought to, and the heart at the start of it keeps its shape even when the ink smudges. Tomorrow I shall wake the boy early and make him trace it with me, so that if the sea takes my sight before it takes my sense, he will know the way home by the marks alone.
