Fine line figure tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a thin, single-line black tattoo on the side of a person's ankle, showing a stylised outline of a figure or hand with a few open angular limbs. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the ink appears dark grey to black against the skin. The leg is cropped mid-calf, and the background is a bright red carpet with a black strappy high-heeled shoe.

Dear Marion,

The wire man is leaning again. You'll remember he was Dad's idea, bent out of old fencing wire the summer before he went into hospital, one arm up as if hailing a bus, the other folded behind him as though he's just remembered something. Every gale since March has knocked him a few degrees further over, and every Saturday I go out with the pliers and set him straight. Yesterday I didn't.
I found him at the bottom of the rhubarb bed, facing the lane instead of the house, knees bent as if he'd been about to jump the hedge. Someone had lifted him off his peg. Tom swears it was the postman's dog. The dog has never once been tall enough to reach the pegs.
I left him where he was. The rhubarb has gone to seed and the bindweed has climbed through his ankles, so he looks less like a man on the move now and more like something that has decided to stay. I sat on the bench with my tea and watched the lane for half an hour, which is what Dad used to do, and nobody came up it except a van selling eggs.
I think I'm going to let him keep going. Come at the weekend and bring the good secateurs. We can decide together which way he should be facing, and then I'll stop pretending it matters. Love, Ruth
