Small star tattoo on a foot

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of a bare foot in a black patent peep-toe high heel, with red nail polish on the toes. A small, solid dark star tattoo sits on the upper foot, rendered in black or grey ink. The shot is taken from above against a dark carpeted floor, with the tattoo as the main point of focus.

Dear Tom,

Mum wrote that the Kestle Bay regatta was rained off again, so you'll have missed the lot, which is probably just as well for your nerves. Mr Pascoe at the chandlery has taken the star off the back of the lifeboat shed for repainting and says he will do it properly this time, with gold leaf, though the committee haggled over the cost for a full week before agreeing. Everyone in town has an opinion about that star. Old Hannah says it was there before the harbour wall, and that your grandfather scratched it into the lintel with a nail the year he came back from the Arctic convoys.

I went up to the sail loft on Tuesday to ask Mrs Rowe whether she'd still make me a new cover for the dinghy. She was sitting at the bench with a tin of brass studs and a pair of black patent shoes, the peep-toe sort the dance hall girls wear, with a small star pricked in ink on the strap so faint it looked like a freckle. A sailor's wife had brought them in to be resoled and had asked that the star be left alone. I did not ask her to explain. Some things in this town are kept quiet for reasons nobody remembers.

Anyway, the dinghy can wait. I've put my name down for the Easter dance at the Ship, and I have a dress the colour of your old jersey. Come home in one piece and dance with me, or at least stand near the bandstand looking sour.

Love, Ruth
