Rose and script quote across the top of a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of the top of a foot showing a fine line rose with small leaves and a loose petal, with a curved line of script running from the ankle towards the rose. The linework is delicate and the tattoo is shaded in grey with no colour ink. The foot is worn in a black lace shoe, and the plain grey floor fills the background.

It had grown from a single cutting dropped by a flower seller called Nell, who sold stems from a barrow at the foot of the steps. One wet evening she bent over the rail to see where her ring had gone, and a stem slipped from her bunch and fell after it. Nobody expected it to take. It caught on a ledge of brick just above the waterline, put out two leaves, then a third, and by the spring it had a bloom the colour of pencil smoke that opened only once the lamps were lit.
Ansel began leaving a slate on the rail each night with a line of writing on it, copied from whatever book he had in his coat. Some nights it was a verse, some nights only the time of the tide. He never signed them. In the autumn a reply appeared, chalked small on the underside of the bridge where only a man leaning far out could read it: the wings of the river is slow tonight, so mind the step.
He minded the step. When the frost came he carried the last lamp down the stairs to the water, and by its light he saw the petal, one pale loose petal turning slowly in the eddy, going out past the bridge towards the sea with a small gold ring still caught in its fold.
