Close-up of a fine line script quote and a shaded rose tattoo across the top of a foot, worn with black lace stiletto heels.

Script quote and rose on the foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A grey fine line tattoo runs from near the ankle across the top of the foot, with the script words 'the nature of this flower is to bloom' ending beside a shaded rose with a fallen petal below it. The linework is thin and even, with soft grey shading on the rose petals and a single leaf shape along the script. The foot rests on a grey stone ground, with a black lace and patent pointed-toe heel in the frame.

Dear Marguerite,

I have the wireless tuned to the dance band and the stationery drawer open, which is how you know I am trying not to think about tomorrow. Mother has pressed the lilac dress twice and burned the cuff once, so it is now shorter at one wrist than the other, and she says nobody will notice, which means everybody will. The vicar's wife has sent round a card asking whether we would like the hymn about the sparrow or the one about the sea. I said the sea. I do not know why I said the sea.

You will remember the rose bush by the coal store at Hollins Farm, the one Father swore was dead every March and then went and proved wrong. Last week I cut the best of its buds and pressed them between the pages of the Bible, because the dictionary felt too much like a joke. This morning I found one open in the glass on the sill, pale at the edges, and I stood there longer than I should have, thinking of what Miss Toller used to say about things needing their own time. The nature of this flower is to bloom, she wrote on the blackboard once, and then told us to copy it out before the bell.

So I am taking the Easter money and the good scissors and I am going to Ferndale on the Thursday train, whatever the wedding lists say. I will send you the address when I have one. Do not tell Mother until I am on the platform.

Your loving sister, Dora

P.S. Ask Harold to keep the back gate open. There is a petal stuck to the envelope and I am not sure how it got there.
