The fish on the harbour wall was already half gone by the time Mags Thorne handed me the chalk. Rain had taken the tail and the gulls had taken the rest, so every spring she drew it again, the same long body with its pointed head, and the same letters squeezed inside in the order her mother had taught her. I never asked what they spelled. You didn't, in Pell Harbour, not while the boats were out.

The boats came back on the evening tide, and the women came down to the wall to count them. If the fish was clean, the men were coming home. If the weather had got at it, you went to the Fleece and waited for someone to tell you otherwise. That March the fish was perfect when I got there, its lines sharp and even, so I thought nothing of it, only that Mags had been up before dawn with her sleeves rolled and a fresh stick of chalk in her apron pocket.
It was my brother's boat that came in last, slow and riding low with nets. Mags didn't look at the water. She looked at me, then took the chalk from my hand and drew one more stroke, a short line through the middle of the fish from head to tail, as though she were closing a letter. 'Now they can see it's finished,' she said. I still don't know whether she meant the fish or the season.
