Out past the dry lake, where the Quiet Mile runs as straight as a ruled line, a water carrier named Tomasa Reyes kept a tin box under her seat. Nobody at the Gila well believed her, least of all the men who sold her diesel.

One October the heat broke early, and a boy turned up at the well with a cracked lip and no shoes. He said he had walked down from the high country, where his mother had gone up to find the snow and never come back. Tomasa gave him water and a seat in the cab. All night the wind pushed sand against the windscreen like someone knocking to be let in.
At first light she opened the tin. Inside, on a square of grey cloth, lay a single flake, six arms of fine branching ice that had not melted in twelve years. She held it on her palm, and it did not melt in the sun either. "Your mother went up the way you came down," she said. The boy looked at the flake for a long time, then took the cloth and tied it over his heart.
They drove on toward the mountains with the window down. Where the road bent past the salt flats, the air went cold for the length of one breath, and the boy said it was snowing. Tomasa did not argue. She had kept that flake for the day someone needed proof of the other country, and she never once asked for it back.
