Small treble clef tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small treble clef is tattooed on the ankle, sitting just above the heel on the inner side of the foot. The design is a single solid black outline with a little shading, and the photograph is in black and white, so no colour is visible. The bare floor and soft shadow across the frame keep the focus on the tattoo at the centre of the composition.

The last piano on the Halcyon Reach was tuned to a key nobody aboard could name, and the engineer's daughter, Ilse Varga, was the only one still willing to climb down into the cold hold to sit beside it. You had been told the instrument was a relic. Forty years of recycled air had warped its soundboard and half the keys stuck, but the hold was quiet in a way the corridors never were, so you went down anyway, carrying a cup of reclaimed tea that tasted of copper.

On the third night of the dimming, when the lights went amber and the ventilation coughed twice, you found a sheet of paper tucked under the lid. It was a score, hand-drawn in pencil, every bar ruled by a careful hand. At the start of each stave sat a treble clef, looped and sure, curling around its own line like a question that had decided to answer itself. Beneath it, in small capitals, someone had written: PLAY IT SLOWLY WHEN THE HULL SINGS.

You did not know what the hull sounded like. Nobody had listened to it in decades. So you pressed the first key, then the second, and the note that came back up through the deck plates was lower than anything the ship had made since launch. The bulkheads answered it one by one, ringing like struck glass in a house with no one left to hear.

Ilse's father had drawn the same clef in grease pencil on the inside of the hold door, just above the handle, so that anyone leaving would know which way the music went. You climbed the ladder slowly, humming the line under your breath, and when the lights came back white at the top of the shaft, the whole ship was humming with you.
