Arrow tattoo on the outer foot

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small arrow runs horizontally across the outer side of a foot, with a triangular head on the left and feathered fletching on the right. A single curved line arcs over the shaft, and the design is outlined in black with some solid fill on the fletching. The photograph is black and white, with bright light and reflections in the background.

Thursday. The archers' muster is on Saturday, and young Tom Ashby has come down from the mill wanting a shaft he can trust. He is seventeen and sure that the curve of a shot is something you can argue with. I took him out to the field behind the church and had him loose three arrows at the far hedge. The first sailed a yard over. The second dropped short into the furrow. I told him the arrow does not care what he meant. It only knows the arc you gave it.

Friday. Tom came back with the third arrow, the one that struck the hedge clean, and asked me to fletch it properly. I cut the feathers to a slant, glued them with hot pitch and bound them in silk the colour of wet slate. Then I drew the head, a flat triangle, and set it on the shaft. When he took it he turned it over in the light from the window and said it looked like something that had been thrown over a wall and had come back to tell about it.
