Fine line floral design with ornamental border
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a symmetrical floral arrangement with large blooms, curling leaves and a sprig at each end, framed by a mandala-like ornamental lower section. The design is built from fine, even black outlines with small dots and hatched detail filling the petals and ornaments. It is drawn in black ink on white paper with no colour, and two black pigment liner pens sit at the top right of the frame.

Sit down, sit, the lift's been broken since Tuesday so you've climbed fourteen floors and you'll hear this one properly. Mrs Hollis on the fourteenth used to draw on the backs of council letters with two black pens she bought from the stationer on Mill Road. She never drew anything real, not a cup or a face. She drew blooms, big open ones like the lilies painted on her mother's biscuit tin, and she filled every petal with tiny hatched lines so the paper looked like it was breathing.

When her hands got bad in the wet months, she stopped going out to the balcony and started pinning her drawings to the stairwell noticeboard by the bins. People took notice. Dunmore from ninth floor added a curled leaf to the left edge without asking. The Patel girl from twelfth put a row of dots along the border, and the kid from the fifth went at a petal with a biro and got told off for it. By March the drawing had been passed down eleven floors, one dot and one shadow at a time, until it looked less like a flower and more like a whole street had agreed on something.
Her pens went missing the week after the lift was fixed. Mrs Hollis swore it was the wind, though the balcony door was shut. Nobody ever found them. But the sprigs at each end of that drawing were left bare on purpose, and if you go down to the bins now you'll see someone has finished one of them in fresh ink, very fine, very neat, and nobody on this estate can tell you who.
