The lift was out again, so I carried the cuttings up nine flights in a Co-op bag, and by the fourth landing the paper had gone soft and the stems were nodding at me like they wanted a sit down too. Mrs Okafor from number 22 says it's a sort of campion she had off a man at the allotments before they knocked them down. She doesn't know its proper name either, which I took as a good sign.

I've put it in the old bread tin on the balcony, the one with the cracked lid, because the window ledge is full of your dad's ashtrays. Yes, I know. The wind up here takes everything off the rail, so I've tied the tin to the railing with a bit of your knitting wool. Half the buds are still shut tight, like they're waiting for a better offer, and I've stopped checking them every morning, though I'm not sure I've stopped checking.

Last night the council sent a man round to say the balconies have to be cleared by March for the cladding. I told him the balcony was the only bit of this block that's mine. He wrote something on his clipboard and said he'd see what he could do, which I'm choosing to hear as a no.

Anyway, the open ones came out this week, small and pale and pleased with themselves. Come up at the weekend and I'll show you before the wind gets them. Bring the good tea, not the bags.
