Fine line French script on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black script tattoo in French runs horizontally across the outer thigh, and the final words are cropped at the left edge of the frame. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against the skin. The composition is warm and softly lit, with a white lace skirt draped above the tattoo and a brown leather bag visible at the right.

By the third week of September the wasps have given up on the windfalls, and you carry the picking bag up the rows of Bramley with its strap cutting into your shoulder. Madame Roux, who has run the orchard above Ledbury since her husband died, watches from the gate with her arms folded. She has spoken French to you all summer, slow and patient, the way she speaks to the bees.

Yesterday she gave you a folded page from a grocer's pad, the ink gone brown. Her sister wrote it in 1961, before she left Lyon for an English husband and never went back. Only one line is legible along the crease, and the rest has bled into a grey smudge where the rain got in. You have been trying to finish the sentence in your head all week, testing endings against the apples as you pick them.
Tonight the cider press is loud with the last of the Kingston Blacks. Madame Roux pours two thimbles of it and tells you the sentence was never meant to be finished. Her sister wrote it to say don't wait for me, then changed her mind and posted nothing. You fold the page back along its crease and tuck it into the leather satchel, where the windfalls bruise each other on the walk down the lane.
At the bottom of the lane the light goes amber across the grass, and the orchard smells of sugar turning sour. You stop at the stile, take the page out once more, and write the missing words in pencil underneath, small enough that nobody will think to read them.
