Fine line arrow on the shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A small arrow tattoo runs diagonally across the upper shoulder, with a fletched tail at the lower left and an arrowhead at the upper right. The shaft is a thin single line interrupted by small dots, drawn in black ink with no shading. The photograph is a close, slightly soft crop of bare skin and a dark strap top, with a cropped view of lips at the top right.

Dear Tom,

The new lodger came up the steps at Mrs Pelling's on Tuesday with a theodolite in a leather case and a dog that would not stop shivering. He is measuring the bay for the council, he says, though nobody has told him where the groynes will go. Mother would have liked him. He asks after everyone's chilblains.
Last night I found him in the back garden with a stick of chalk, drawing a line from the iron gate down across the shingle. Every few yards he set a dot. I asked what it was. He said it was the path the bell buoy took when the storm dragged it off Sand Head, and that he had followed it at low water, marking each place it had rested. Then he drew a little arrowhead at the sea end and feathers at the gate end, and said an arrow always shows you which way something has gone, never where it will stop.
I did not believe a word of it, but this morning the tide had taken the chalk and left the dots behind. Eleven of them, pale as salt, running out past the last groyne. Mrs Pelling swept the rest away with the front step.
I have decided I will walk the line at low water on Sunday, counting dots, and if I reach the buoy you will be the first to hear. Bring the good tide tables when you come home, and do not let them tell you the sea is only numbers.
Your loving sister, Ada
