Close-up of a small fine line script tattoo reading let it be behind a person's ear on the neck, in a sepia photograph.

Let it be script tattoo on the neck

Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

The photo shows the side of a person's neck and ear, with dark hair falling across the upper frame and a hoop earring with a small charm. The tattoo is the words let it be in a thin, joined cursive script, sitting just behind the ear along the hairline. The ink is a single dark tone and the sepia colouring of the photograph makes the whole image warm and brown.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The surveyor from the trust wanted the north curtain wall pointed before the spring open days, every failed joint raked out and repacked with lime. I walked him to the foot of the tower and showed him the crack that ran up from the postern arch, a hand's width at the base and thinning to a thread as it climbed. He photographed it twice.

I have kept Dunmorrow for twenty-six years. My father's rule was to stop the water getting in and leave the stone to settle, so each autumn I cleared the gutters, cut back the ivy and let the jackdaws have the chimney. The crack was there when I came. Every March I measured it with a brass gauge bought from a chandler in Berwick, and every March it had shifted less than a pencil line.

The surveyor rang in February to say the trust had approved the work after all. I drove up with the lime and stood looking at the tower for a long time. The wall had found its own way of holding together, the rubble it had shed over the centuries packed behind the face like ballast, and any repair I made would only seal a gap that was doing useful work. I put the trowels back in the van.

In April I wrote to the surveyor and copied out, under my signature, the words my mother used to say whenever I fretted over exams or tides or the price of coal: let it be. He replied with a single line asking whether I wanted that on the file. I said yes. Then I went up to the postern arch to watch the swifts come back to the gap.
