Fine line geometric mandala on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small, symmetrical mandala built from overlapping circles and pointed petal shapes sits on the upper back beside the shoulder blade. The linework is thin and even, with faint stippled shading toward the centre that gives the design some depth. The image is greyscale, with a dark top strap at the left edge and a softly blurred background.

Fourteenth January, and the beck has frozen clear to the bottom of the lower pasture. I set the theodolite on the flat stone by the gate and drew the sight lines in chalk on the ice, the way my father taught me before his hands gave out. Eight circles, each one struck from the rim of the last, until the figure closed into a flower no wider than a cartwheel. Where the petals met the outer ring I hammered in pegs, and the frost took the chalk as it dried.

The ewes came over at dusk to see what I had been doing. They stood inside the outer ring and would not step across the petals, though the fence on that side has been down since November. Mrs Pell at the lodge says the old farmers laid these rings to keep the lambing safe, and I told her it was superstition and not the sort of thing a licensed surveyor writes in his book. I wrote it in the book anyway.
This morning the pegs were still standing, but the chalk had gone grey under a skin of new snow, and the petals showed clearer than they had the day before, as if the ground were pressing them up from underneath. The needle on my compass hung steady toward the middle of the flower. I left the instrument on the stone, went in for my tea, and did not look back at it until the light was nearly gone.
