Geometric butterfly on upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black outline of a butterfly with open wings is built from straight lines and triangular facets. The lines are thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black on the skin. The butterfly sits on the outer upper arm against a plain pale background, with the top of the arm and a white vest visible at the edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mara had been told the lattice would take a month, and by the eleventh day she had stopped counting the joints. The plotter hummed over the cracked dome of Hesper Station, feeding her coordinates, and each point she typed had to be joined to the last without lifting the stylus. Straight lines only. The old survey house had insisted on it: a curve was a guess, and a guess could fall out of the sky.

The specimen was a single forewing, pressed in resin and found in a sealed seed vault beneath the greenhouse floor. Its veins ran in fans, each one dividing where the membrane had once held sunlight. Mara measured every angle with the brass protractor her grandfather had left her, then rebuilt the wing as facets, triangle after triangle, until it glowed on the screen like a cut stone. Her supervisor, Pell, leaned over her shoulder and said it looked like a kite that had forgotten how to fly.

She did not argue. She sent the file to the printing bay, where steel rods were bent into the shape of its body. When the first assembly came out warm and light, she carried it up to the observation ring at dusk and held it out toward the vents. The air from the ridge tore at its edges, then slid through the gaps between the lines, and the frame turned once, slowly, and lifted.

Pell watched from the hatch with her arms folded. Mara did not look at her. She was watching the shadow of the frame cross the floor, a black outline of wings on pale metal, each facet catching the last light before it went. Below them the greenhouse fans kept turning. Nothing had flown on Hesper in eighty years.
