Fine line Latin script on upper chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of a thin black script tattoo across the upper chest, reading alia volat propriis in lowercase joined lettering. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink is a dark, uniform black on light skin. The composition is tight, with the lettering centred in the frame between a black lace bra strap and the neckline of a grey marl vest top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Harrow Fold thought much of Agnes Pell when she was small, except for the goose. The goose followed her to the well and to the school gate, and when the teacher, Mr Dunning, made the children stand in a line for the register, the goose stood beside her and hissed at anyone who laughed.

Agnes grew up and married the miller's son, and the goose died in the second winter. She kept its feathers in a biscuit tin under the stairs because she could not bring herself to throw them out. Her husband said a house full of old feathers would draw mice. She said nothing, and went on saving them.

Then the reunion came round, twenty-five years since the school closed, and the whole village crowded into the Fleece with sandwiches and warm wine. Mr Dunning, now stooped and hard of hearing, asked every woman her name and then asked what she had done with her life. Agnes told him she had kept geese, and laughed, and he looked at her for a long time without speaking.

She went home that night and took the tin down. Under the feathers lay the old school register, which she had taken on the last day and never returned. In the margin beside her name someone had written, in the teacher's careful hand, the words she had never been able to read: alia volat propriis. Mr Dunning had told the class it meant she flies on her own wings. Agnes had been seven and thought it was only about geese.
