Script quote along the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A single line of black cursive script runs horizontally across the side of the ribcage, reading with pain comes strength. The linework is thin and even, with the letters slightly slanted and the ascenders and descenders extended. The ink is solid black on pale skin, and the photo is a close, slightly angled shot against a plain grey-green background, with the top of a hand and the waistband of jeans at the edges of the frame.

Sit yourself by the window, love, and mind the draught. It comes straight off the sea through the glass and it has never once asked permission. Take the good chair. The other one has been sat in by every lodger since the Coronation, and it has never forgiven a single one of them.

I have kept this house on Gull Terrace for forty-one winters, and the sea has taken four of my front steps and two of Walter's back teeth. Walter went out on the Pemberton smack the spring the harbour wall gave way. He came home with his palms split and his mouth shut, and when I asked him what the water had said to him, he told me it said nothing at all. It only wanted to know what you could carry.

So the next morning he took a cold chisel down to the lowest course of stone, where the spring tides reach, and cut a line along it no longer than a man's forearm. Slanting. Thin as a hair. The neighbours laughed and said he was carving his name on the sea. He wasn't. He was marking how far the water had got, and how much more a body could take before it came over the top.

The wall held the next February, though it cost the lad who helped with the mortar his left thumb. Walter never spoke of the line again. I go down at low water most mornings and run my finger along it, and the cuts have worn soft now, the way a child's name goes soft on a school desk. You can still read every letter if you are patient. Finish your tea, and I'll walk you down before the tide turns.
