On the nineteenth night of the dry month, Leandros lifted the wax with his knife. He did not open it. He only listened, and from somewhere under the lid came a faint scratch, like a reed drawn carefully across clay, letter after letter, as if someone inside were trying to finish a sentence before the lamp went out.
He pressed the wax back down, carried the jar to the harbour wall at dawn, and set it facing the sea where the fishermen would see it first. With the point of the same knife he scored a line into the wax: there is always hope. In the spring the almond trees flowered on the bare side of the mountain, and the men came home walking north.
