Fine line outline of a US state on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single black outline of a US state sits on the forearm, drawn in a thin, even line with no interior shading or fill. The skin is smooth and lightly lit against a dark knitted sleeve at the top of the frame, and the plain background keeps the focus on the outline.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The state line had never been straight, and Walt Pruitt said so every Monday at the drafting table, as if the land had argued with him personally. He kept a steel rule in his shirt pocket and a tin of Indian ink he refused to replace, and he would not let me touch the tracing paper until I had sharpened my nib twice.

The county had sent us a bundle of surveyors' notes from 1821, tied with string that had gone the colour of weak tea. Most of the border followed the rivers, which Walt considered the only honest thing about it. But down in the southeast a clerk had written that the line bent 'where the tree was,' and nobody had ever found the tree. Walt spent a whole week on that corner, holding the rule against the lamp, muttering about bootheels and bad handwriting.

On the Friday he finally inked it. The notch came out sharp and a little ridiculous, a small jag where a clerk had lost his patience or his place. I asked him whether it was wrong. He said it was exactly as wrong as it had been for a hundred and eighty years, and that the people who lived behind that jag had never once complained to him about it.

He lifted the sheet, blew across the wet lines, and handed it to me to carry to the frame. I still have the offcut he trimmed from the margin. It shows only the top of the outline and a thumbprint of ink where he rested his hand.
