State outline and home script on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a thin, solid black fine line outline of a US state on the upper arm, with the word home in cursive script beneath its lower right edge. The linework is uniform and unshaded, and the ink appears crisp against the skin. The image is black and white, with long hair at the left edge and a dark background, and the arm fills most of the frame.

Walt, the county map is finally dry, so I am posting it to you with this letter before Mother changes her mind about the postage. Dad drew the whole state for the school in 1931, freehand, using the edge of a biscuit tin for a ruler, and the western line never did come straight. You will see the panhandle poking out like a thumb, which he always said was the only part worth looking at.

The word in the bottom corner is his. He wrote it small, the same way he signed the feed bills, and then he made us all stand round the table and agree it was the only word a map needed. I did not agree. I thought a map ought to show the rivers, the railway and the sandhills, not one soft word about the people. But I have come round to him this week, sat here with the rain coming sideways off the plains and the lamp turned low.

Enclosed with the map is the tin. Inside is his pencil, worn down to the length of a thumb, and a scrap of paper with the outline traced again, very faint, as if he meant to carry it with him wherever he went. Use it on your own page if you like. Just leave the word where he put it, at the bottom, where you will find it when you are lost.
