Fine line state outline on the hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line outline of a map shape sits on the palm of the hand, with the skin creases visible around it. The linework is thin, even and dark black, with no shading or fill inside the outline. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame against plain, lightly lit skin, with the edges of the outline sharp and clearly defined.

Dear Tamsin, the ferry from Port Ansel was late again, so I have had time to think about lines. The survey clerks came through in spring with their new charts and told us the old borders were drawn by men who never walked the shore. They have moved the northern edge to follow the ice shelf, which means the lake towns now send their grain tithe to a state that exists mostly in the ledgers at Mirelle Hall.

You remember Orla Vance from the customs post. She kept a fine steel nib in a tin and would press a clerk's hand flat on the register, then draw around the fingers with ink thin enough to need a lens to read. Her own palm carried the whole old country in a single unbroken line: the ragged top where the lakes spill, the notch on the east side, the square stub at the bottom where the rivers gather. Nobody argued with that outline. It was the only mark the clerks trusted, because paper goes soft in the damp and ink under skin lasts longer than any survey.

Last week I held my own hand up to the window of the records room while the lamp was low. The line was still there, faint and blue-black, and it matched the old map pinned behind the desk almost exactly, down to the little bite at the western shore. I traced it with my thumb the way Orla used to, slowly, the way you would walk a boundary you were not sure would still be standing in the morning. Come home before the thaw and I will show you where the old border runs, if you still know the way.
