Outlined landmass with 'nice' on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a thin black outline of a landmass with the word nice in cursive script at its lower right edge. The linework is even and solid with no shading, and the ink is black. The photograph is taken at an angle against a blurred background that shows another arm with a coloured sleeve tattoo.

The survey ledger for the western coast had been sent up from the field office in a tin box, and Margaret Okafor found the trouble on page forty-one. Someone had drawn the coastline in pencil, neat as a hem, and then, in the margin beside a bay the surveyors called only the hook, had written a single word in looping copperplate. Nice. No full stop. Nothing else on the page.

The department had a rule about marginalia. Remarks were struck through, initialled and filed under Queries. Margaret tried the rule for a morning and failed at it. She pulled the field notebooks for the same year and found the surveyor, Tomasz Vidal, had written nice beside a stone quay, a flooded salt pan and a hill with no name. Every entry was an assessment of the land, and every one was kind. She began to suspect he had simply run out of adjectives and kept the one that did the most work.
In March she took the ledger down to the coast herself, which was not in her remit. The hook was still a hook. The quay had been rebuilt twice. She stood on the wall with the book open against the wind and read the word aloud, and a fisherman mending a net three boats down looked up and said, "Aye, it is." He did not ask what she meant. Neither did she.
Back at her desk she did not strike it through. Under it, in her own neat hand, she added the date, and then, after some thought, the word nice as well, so that the page now said the same thing twice, once by each of them. Filed under Queries, it was the most honest thing in the box.
