Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a person lying on a patterned bed with one leg bent and a hand wrapped around the knee. A thin black vertical line of script-like marks runs down the lower leg, and a delicate black line encircles the wrist. The composition is a tight crop focused on the limbs, with a pale blue sheet and a white and grey damask bedspread in the background.

The fair packed up on the Tuesday, but Mab Corran stayed behind on the common with the last two caravans, because the boy who ran the swing boats had not come back from the river. She sat on the step of her wagon and unpicked the ribbon she had worn all summer, a length of black silk the strongman's wife had given her for stitching the tent flaps.

Every name she had ever sewn for the travellers was written along it in her small, careful hand, each letter so fine that a person had to run a finger down the length to read it. Mab had learned her letters from a book the fortune-teller kept in a tin box, and she had never once spelled a name wrong. "Read it out," her mother used to say, "and the road will know who it's taking."

She found the boy at dusk, sitting on the bank with his shoes off and the water going past him black and quick. He had the look of someone who had been counting something and lost the number. "I can't remember how my name ends," he said. Mab took the ribbon from her wrist, where she had knotted it, and held it out. He ran his thumb down the silk, lips moving, until he reached the last stitch and found his own name there, the one she had sewn in the spring for luck.

They walked back across the common without speaking. By morning the caravans had gone east, and the boy wore the ribbon knotted round his wrist, the rest of it trailing down the side of his leg like a road he had decided to follow.
