Script tattoo on a thigh

Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A person lies on a bed with white sheets and a duvet, head turned away from the camera and wearing a red top. A small black script tattoo runs diagonally down the outer thigh, and the wording is too small and angled to read clearly. The shot is soft and natural in colour, with the white bedding filling most of the frame.

Nell had written the letter three times before the coal dust stopped getting into the ink. The fourth copy lay folded on the kitchen table beside the tin of tea, and outside the winding wheel at Brackenhill had gone quiet for the changeover, so the whole row of terraces seemed to be listening for something.

The line she had chosen was short, the sort of thing her mother used to chalk above the back door: keep the lamp low, come home by the light. She copied it onto the page in a careful hand, then again on a strip of brown paper, because Tom would laugh at a letter but never at a thing he could carry. She tucked the strip under the lid of his tin of sandwiches for the early shift and told herself he would not find it until the lunch break.

He found it at the coal face, with dust in his teeth and his mate Alf reading over his shoulder. Alf said it was soft. Tom said nothing for a long while, then asked the deputy for a pencil and wrote underneath, in capitals that sloped like the seam, the single word yes.

When the cage brought him up at six, Nell was already at the pit gate with her shawl pulled tight. He did not speak. He put the wet paper in her palm, the pencilled word still legible, and closed her fingers over it as if he were settling a debt. Behind him the wheel began to turn again, slow and certain, and the lights on the hill went out one lamp at a time.
