Scallop shell on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small scallop shell is tattooed on the outer upper arm, drawn with dark outline and fan-shaped ribs. The shell is shaded in soft grey tones, with lighter areas toward the top. The skin is warm brown, and the composition is tight on the back and arm against a plain wooden surface.

The reunion was held in the old schoolhouse at Carrow Bay because the village hall had flooded, and the children who had sat in its three rows forty years before came back grey at the temples and loud about it. Nobody wanted to talk about the summer the sea came up the lane. Maud Ferris did. She set a tin of shortbread on the teacher's desk and told them about the shell.

In the old telling, a fisher's daughter called Ilse found a scallop on the tideline that opened when she said her own name and closed when anyone else tried. She kept it in her apron pocket. Each year the sea took one child from the bay, and each year Ilse went down at low water and sang the names over the sand until the water gave one back. The shell was the price she paid, a fan of ribs gone grey as rain.
Maud said the shell had been passed down the class by a game nobody remembered starting. Whoever held it at the end of the summer term kept the bay's luck. Tom Wicks had it last, and then the lane flooded, and then nobody could say where it had gone. Someone at the back laughed and called it a fairy story for infants. Maud opened the tin. Under the shortbread lay a scallop worn smooth, its ribs faint, and the schoolhouse went quiet enough to hear rain on the roof.
"Ilse only sang for the ones who asked her to," Maud said, and pushed the shell across the desk towards the man who had never once in forty years said sorry. He didn't pick it up. Outside, the tide was turning, and the bay lay flat and patient, waiting for someone to ask.
