Fine line script on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a woman's forearm and wrist showing a thin black script tattoo that runs vertically along the inner arm. The lines are fine and even, with no visible shading, and the lettering is not clearly legible. A blue silk scarf printed with pink and white patterns is knotted around the wrist, and a black handbag and rolled denim sleeve sit in the frame.

When the young man came up from the valley with a letter for his mother in Lisbon, he could not say what he wanted to tell her. Ada asked him what the weather had been like the day he left. He said the rain had been so hard the lane turned to a river. She wrote that down, and after it the rest came out of him in order, the way water follows once a stone is shifted.
The letter went down on the morning coach. Three weeks later a reply came back addressed to the post office, in a hand so cramped and careful that the clerk had to hold it up to the window. It said only: the lane is still a river, come home when you can. Ada read it aloud at the counter and folded it into her apron pocket.
That night she tied the blue silk back round the pen tin and counted the letters she had written that were nothing but weather. There were hundreds. She had never once thought them wasted, and she did not start now.
