Small wave line tattoo on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single thin black line forms a small curling wave or swirl on the inner wrist. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink appears dark grey to black against the skin. Woven bracelets in red, pink, blue, turquoise and yellow sit around the wrist and hand, while the tattoo is the small monochrome detail at the centre of the frame.

The lamp has been dark for ten minutes when you notice the sea has changed its mind. Your uncle is asleep in the chair by the stove, his boots still wet from the landing, and you stand at the gallery rail with the logbook under your arm, trying to read a swell that refuses to be read. Out past the Mare Stones the water rises in long grey shoulders and then, all at once, curls back on itself, a single slow hook of foam that hangs in the dusk before it falls.

You have seen that shape a hundred times. Your mother drew it for you on the back of a tide table the winter before she left for the mainland, one unbroken pencil line that began at the bottom of the page and rolled over into a curl, and she told you it was the sea saying hello and goodbye in the same breath. You kept the paper folded in the logbook. It is still there, soft as cloth, between the entries for March gales and a dead seal on the slipway.
Tonight you do not light the lamp for ships. You take the pen from the cord around your neck, open to a clean page, and draw the curl the way she did, once, without lifting the nib. The ink bleeds a little where your hand is cold. It looks like nothing much, a small dark mark in a book of weather.
At first light the swell has flattened and the boat from Penhallow is coming round the point with the post and the bread. You go down the steps two at a time to meet it, and you do not look back at the page. Your uncle will read the log later and find the drawing, and he will not ask about it, because he has known for years what the sea does when it turns.
