Word LOVE with zigzag lines on upper arm
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop shows a woman's upper arm, with a small tattoo of the word LOVE in capital letters with a zigzag line running above it. The lettering and line work are thin and black, with no shading or colour visible. The background is a blurred street scene with a white car, and the woman holds a green clutch with a gold bow and a camera strap over her shoulder.

Ada Penhallow kept the key in a hut above the cove where the cables came up out of the sea like drowned hair, and for nineteen years she had sent nothing but shipping. Ships' names, tonnage, the price of pilchards. So when a wireless man on the bar at Falmouth asked her to carry a message to a girl in Lisbon, she took it down with the same flat care she gave everything, and only afterwards saw what she had written.

The message was one word, sent eleven times. LOVE. Between each one, the needle on the recording drum jumped up and fell back, a zigzag she had to trace in ink because the company wanted every line on paper. The boy who brought it said the sender was a fitter who could not write a letter to save his life and thought a telegram ought to be short enough to cost nothing.
She sent it as he asked, eleven times, then held the paper up to the lamp. The zigzags stood above the word like a row of small mountains, and she thought of how the sea looked from the cliff on a bad day, all teeth and no shape. Nobody in the office had ever sent a word without a number after it.
The reply came two days later, not by wire but by a cable boy running up the path, out of breath. It said only: RECEIVED ELEVEN TIMES. ANSWER TWELVE. Ada read it twice, sat a long while with her hand resting on the key, and then tapped out the one word she had never once sent in nineteen years, slow enough that the needle could draw every rise and fall.
