Fine line script on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a thin, single-line cursive word tattooed on the inner forearm, with a small dot placed above the left end of the script. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the lettering runs diagonally across the arm. The image is black and white, with soft light on the skin and a pale fabric sleeve visible at the top edge.

Dear Ruth,

Ward 7 has gone quiet the way it does around three, when the monitors settle into their own rhythm and even the trolleys stop rattling. I'm writing this on the back of a spare drug chart because I left my notebook in the staff room, and because you always said I never wrote anything down properly. Mrs Okafor in bay two asked me to post a card for her granddaughter, so I've been practising on the spare sheets, the joined-up kind you made me learn from Gran's old copybooks.
Last night she gave me the word she wanted to send, spelled out slowly while I held the pen. It was only one word, and she made me write it three times before she was satisfied the loops ran right. I thought it a strange thing to choose, but she said it was what her husband used to say when the kettle boiled, and she wanted the girl to hear it in his voice. I put a dot above the first letter to mark where the card should begin, and she laughed and said I'd make a proper clerk yet.
This morning she didn't wake for the handover. The card is still in my pocket, folded once, the ink not quite dry in the creases. I haven't decided whether to post it or hand it to the sister in the family room, and I keep turning it over as if the answer might be written on the back.
So I've put the kettle on, the way he would have wanted, and I'm going to drink my tea while it's hot. Write back when you can. Tell me what Mum says about the new flat, and whether you ever found that pen I borrowed in 2009.
Love, Tom
