Script phrase on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a forearm with a thin, single-line cursive script that reads so it goes, running diagonally upwards across the skin. A small dot sits above the start of the lettering, and the rest of the arm is softly shaded against a dark background. The image is black and white, with the fine linework and the lettering as the clear focus.

Dear Nell,

The hotel on Brunswick Street has finally let me take down the old fascia, so for three nights I've been up a ladder under a lamp clipped to my collar, lettering the new one by hand. Dad would have sneered at the gold leaf, but he'd have stayed to watch, which is more than he ever did for anything I made.

I ruined the first two attempts. The brush kept wanting to hurry the long downstroke, and the swoop at the end came out like a dropped hook. On the third night the street went quiet around two, a taxi hissed past, and I stopped trying to be neat. I let the line run loose the way his did, and it stood up straight on the glass.

Then came the dot, which is the bit I'd been dreading. You remember how he always set a full stop before he finished a sentence, as if he were tamping down the ground before stepping off it. I loaded the brush, touched the board once, and lifted. It sat above the first letter, small and black and entirely certain.

When the paint was dry I climbed down and read it aloud to the empty pavement, the way he used to read the paper to the kettle. So it goes. The rain started, the sign caught the streetlight, and for a moment it looked less like a hotel name and more like something he'd have said when the bill came. I'm posting you a photo of it, so you can see for yourself. Love, Kath
