Fine line script on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small line of cursive script in black ink runs diagonally across the inner forearm. The linework is thin and even, with the lettering set in a single line. The photograph is warm in tone, with a pink knit sleeve, patterned bracelets and a hand with red nail polish framing the tattoo.

Mind the step, it's worn where a hundred years of sandals have stood, and there's a draught on the stair that will take your candle if you let it. Sit here, by the warm stones of the scriptorium. Brother Anselm was the finest hand in the house, and he knew it, which is the first thing a copyist should never know.

He had one habit the abbot disliked. Between the lines of the psalter, where no reader would look, he wrote small words of his own in a hand so fine you had to tilt the vellum to the window to catch them. Nothing holy, mostly. A complaint about the cold. The name of a village girl who sold him eggs. A line from a song the carters sang on the Lyon road, copied out in a language nobody in the abbey spoke but him.

The abbot found the margin in the spring and summoned him with the book open on his knees. Anselm braced himself for penance. Instead the old man ran a thumb along the faint script and asked what it meant. Anselm told him, haltingly, and the abbot was quiet a long while. Then he said that it was the only prayer in the whole book anyone would read twice, closed the psalter, and let the ink stay where it was.

Anselm's pages outlived the abbey. The psalter went to a cathedral, then to a lawyer's house, then to a shelf nobody dusted. The small words are still there, if you tilt the page to the window. Go on, take the candle. Mind the step.
