Dear Nell, the orrery finally broke on Tuesday. The brass arm that carries Saturn snapped clean off at the joint, and Mr Pryce from the school says it cannot be mended for under four pounds, which the parish council will not stump up for a thing nobody looks at anymore. So I carried it home in my arms, you'll laugh, and set it on the kitchen table beside the wireless while I tried to fix it with Father's soldering iron.

I got Jupiter back on its wire by teatime. Mars still wobbles. Saturn I could not save, so I did what you would have done and drew it instead. Ink on the back of an old tide table, the rings done with a ruler, and little dots scattered all round for stars, because the sky over the marsh at night is far too busy to be left empty. Then I pinned it up where the orrery used to sit.

Mrs Dunning came in for her ration book and stood staring at it for ages. She said she had never seen Saturn look so pleased with itself. I laughed, but she was right. I tilted the rings the wrong way on purpose, and now the whole thing looks like it is winking at the room.

Don't tell Mother I used her good ink. I'll post the tide table if you want it, though I suspect London has its own clocks. Write back soon and tell me whether they let you look through the telescope at Greenwich, and whether the stars there are as stingy as they are here.
