Fine line script on a thigh at the beach
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A bare leg rests on a light blue towel on a sunlounger, with a hand wearing gold rings in the foreground. A thin black script tattoo runs across the outer thigh, with letters too small and fine to read clearly. The background shows a beach, wooden furniture and people in the sea, with the tattoo in sharp focus and colour kept to the skin and towel tones.

Old Mags Pellow kept her ink in a cockle shell on the windowsill of the net loft at Skerrow, and every spring she wrote the names of the boats on the cork floats with a goose quill, so small that a man had to hold a float to his nose to read it. The harbour master called it foolishness. The fleet called it luck, and went out regardless.

The spring the Mary Dunnet was lost on the Gannet Bank, her skipper's boy, Tam Ross, was sixteen and had never once been trusted with the quill. He sat on the slipway with a heap of floats in his lap while the wind worked at the shutters, and asked her why she bothered when nobody could read a word of it.
She said the sea could read. It did not need the letters big, only true. She pressed the quill into his hand, made him write his father's name on the last float, and tied it to the kelp line off the bar, where the boats found their way home on the flood.
Three nights later the Dunnet came in on the tide with her sail stripped and her crew asleep on the thwarts, and the first thing Tam saw in the grey light was his father's float bobbing against her bow, still dry under the salt. He lifted it to his nose and could just make out the tail of his own letters. Mags was already back at the windowsill, pouring fresh ink into the shell.
