Palm tree tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A slender palm tree with a long curved trunk and a cluster of fronds at the top is tattooed on the forearm. The linework is thin and mostly solid black, with a little soft shading in the fronds. The background shows a sandy beach, grey sea and overcast sky, and the person holds a teal towel in the lower left of the frame.

The palm had travelled with the fair for nineteen seasons, riding in the back of the lorry in a tub of salt-grey earth, and in all that time nobody had ever seen it grow more than a hand's width. Old Ezra Bright said that was because it was homesick. He said it the way he said most things, looking at the sky and not at whoever he was talking to.

Nell worked the coconut shy and she did not believe in homesickness. In October, when the fair pulled up its poles at Saltcombe and the wind came in off the water, she lifted the palm out of its tub and wrapped its roots in a wet sack. Ezra watched from the caravan step and said nothing. She walked it down the slipway past the shuttered ice cream kiosk and the bent railing, to where the sand went hard and dark.
She dug with a tent peg and her hands until the hole was deep enough to stand the thing up. The sea was a flat grey sheet and the sky had no sun in it at all. She packed the sand round the roots and stamped it down, and then she waited, because that was what the fair had taught her: you waited for the thing to decide.
The tide came in overnight and took the tub, the sacking and the tent peg. In the morning Nell walked back along the strand with her hands in her pockets. The palm was still there, a slender stalk at the edge of the water, its long trunk bent over in one curve, leaning out towards the sea as if it had seen something on the far side of the bay and meant to go and fetch it.
