Script and sugar skull tattoos on thighs
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare legs rest on white bedding, showing a line of black script lettering across the outer side of the left thigh. On the right thigh is a shaded black and grey sugar skull with heart-shaped eyes and nose, surrounded by small floral and decorative details. The soft white background keeps the focus on the dark ink and the smooth, even skin tone.

Every November the bell at Harrowmere rang once for each name the sexton had written down, and by the third bell Aggie Tull had her sugar moulds out on the scrubbed table. She pressed the paste in with her thumbs, sixty skulls in a row, and while they dried on the sill she lettered a name across each brow in thin black ink, the way her grandmother had taught her, the strokes looping like a fence with a gate left open.

The forest came down to the last cottages at the edge of the village, and the old folk said the dead walked out of it on the night of the feast, following the scent of marigold and burnt sugar. Aggie never believed the stories, but she gave the skulls heart-shaped eyes all the same, a small dark heart cut into each socket and another for the nose, so nobody could mistake them for anything but a welcome.
One year a skull came back to her table the morning after. Its name was Tobias Rill, a boy drowned in the millpond the summer she was nine, and the sugar had cracked along the jaw as if something had leaned on it from inside. She sat with it until the candles guttered, then took her pen and wrote a second line beneath the first: come home by the gate.
On the feast night she set them out along the lane, and by dawn the skull bearing the widow's name was gone from the step, its heart-shaped eyes turned towards the trees. Nobody in Harrowmere saw who took it, though the gate in the forest wall stood open, and it had never once been left open before.
