Fine line script on the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small, thin black script tattoo sits on the side of the neck behind the ear, with the wording too small to read clearly at this size. The photograph shows the back of a person with long dark hair pulled over one shoulder, with bare shoulders and back. The dark background keeps the focus on the skin and the delicate linework.

The lorry from Calais had nothing aboard but crates of second-hand paperbacks and, wedged between two atlases, a damp envelope. Mair handed it to me at the Dover desk because I was the one who could read other people's handwriting. My nan taught me on the backs of tide tables, and I still can't stop reading whatever is put in front of me.

The address was a flat above a bakery in Saint-Omer. Inside was a single sheet covered in pencil so fine it looked breathed onto the paper. Most of it I could make out. The last word ran up the margin, slanting, rubbed soft where a thumb had worried at it for years.
I should have stamped it and sent it on. Instead I carried it home and held it under the lamp for three nights, tracing the loops onto greaseproof paper, copying them onto the back of my payslips, trying every ending that fit the shape. On the fourth morning I bought a stamp and wrote back, in my own hand, the word I thought she meant, with a line asking if I had it right.
The reply came nine days later in a green envelope with no return address. One line, in pencil: "Close. Yes. Keep the rest." I still have it in my drawer at work. Some mornings I take it out and read it again, and I still can't tell whether she meant the word or me.
