Mrs Penhallow bought the cottage in March with a tin trunk, a cat called Admiral and a list of seeds written on the back of a tide table. She has not asked me to do a single thing in the garden beyond keeping the path clear for the coal man. Most mornings she sits on the step with her tea and counts the flowers out loud, as though they might wander off if she loses her place. Last Tuesday I found a wren's nest in the crook of the lowest stem, four eggs the colour of weak tea, tucked where the flowers hang closest to the brick. I stood there longer than I should have with a trowel in one hand, thinking that the wall had been waiting for a reason to stay standing, and that the wren had given it one.
