Small elephant outline on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small outlined elephant tattoo sits on the upper back of a woman seen from behind, with her long hair gathered into a loose half-up ponytail. The design is drawn in a simple black fine line with minimal shading, and the body of the elephant is left unfilled. The image is in colour, but the ink is black and grey, and the background shows an indoor room with a desk and a phone.

Dear Tomas, The snow shut the Kessel Pass on Tuesday, so the last of the mules are wintering in the lower sheds and I am writing this at the kitchen table with the lamp turned low. Your father's tally book is still on the shelf above the kettle, the one with drawings crowded into the margins. I found the elephant you sketched the summer you were nine, the one with its trunk curled like a question mark, and I have pinned it inside the lid of the tea tin where it will catch your eye.

The carters who came through in those days swore the first elephant to climb the pass had been led by a silver-nosed woman from Samarkand, and that the beast refused the bridge and took the goat track instead, one careful foot after another. Your father believed every word. He used to say the road remembers who walked it slowly. I thought it was nonsense until the spring the avalanche took the upper bridge and the goat track was the only way across, and I felt, stupidly, as if someone had put a hand on my shoulder.
I crossed with the grain carts in April, counting steps out loud the way he taught me. Halfway, where the rock juts out like a shoulder, I found a small iron bell wedged in a crack, green with age and no bigger than a thimble. I rang it once. The sound went down the valley and came back twice, like something answering. It sits on the windowsill now, beside the lamp.
Please come up at midsummer and bring your daughter. She can ring it herself.
