Close-up of a fine black script tattoo reading Amicizia on the back of the neck, partly covered by reddish-brown hair.

Amicizia script on the nape of the neck

Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of the word Amicizia, the Italian word for friendship, written in a thin, flowing black script on the skin at the back of the neck. The linework is fine and even, with a light, flat grey tone and no shading. The hair falls across the upper part of the frame and the photo has a warm, soft tone.

Dear Nadia,

I found your spare key under the pot of basil on the eleventh floor, which is where you said it would be, so I let myself into Flat 14 with the rain coming sideways off the car park and the lift making its usual noise like a cough. The radiator in the hall is still knocking. Mrs Okonedo next door says it has been knocking since the Jubilee and nobody has ever bled it properly. I told her I would tell you, so consider yourself told.

I took the blue mug to the Co-op on Saturday and the girl at the till asked if I was the one who'd been crying in the stairwell. I said no, that was the wind. She didn't believe me and neither did you, which is fine. Amicizia, you used to say, when you wanted me to stop being sorry about something. You wrote it on the back of a bus ticket the week we moved in and stuck it to the fridge, and it's still there, curling at one corner, held up by the magnet shaped like a lighthouse.

The removal van left your boxes in the wrong order. The kettle is in the box marked books. I have not yet worked out how to make tea without it, so I have been drinking the cold water from the tap and calling it a sacrifice.

Come back when you can. Bring the good scissors. The fringe is getting in my eyes again and nobody does it quite like you.

Yours, from the top of the block, Jo
