Fine line script quote on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single line of cursive script runs horizontally across the pale skin of a forearm, with the words partly legible. The linework is thin and even, rendered in dark grey to black ink with little shading. The lettering sits centred on a dark background, which makes the fine strokes stand out clearly.

Dear Nell,

The big wheel went down for the first time since the rain, and Mr Pryce swore at it the whole afternoon as if it had personally insulted his mother. I'm writing from the back of the dodgem tent with my boots off and a tin of peaches on my knee. We're on the field behind the rec in Hadleigh now, and when the lights came on at dusk the whole village stopped talking to look up at us.
You'll remember the old man who sold the glass eyes and the moth-eaten lion. He died in his wagon on Sunday, quiet as anything, with the lamp still burning. We had no ground to bury him in, so Ada read a bit from a hymnbook she'd carried since Skegness, and then we stood in the grass watching the Waltzer come up one bulb at a time. Somebody said he'd want them lit, so we kept every light on till morning, which cost us a week's takings in generator diesel.
He used to mutter a line whenever the bulbs flickered: the stars are all alight. Nobody ever knew whether he meant the sky or the fairground, and I've decided it was both. I'm sending you the handbill he left me, the one with his wobbly handwriting on the back. Keep it somewhere dry, and don't let your Sam use it for a bookmark.
Love, Bet
