Fine line script quote on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black script tattoo runs across the inner forearm of a person wearing a black and white striped top. The thin, single-weight linework forms a handwritten phrase that appears to read "be still & know", with the ink sitting flat against pale skin. The background is plain and softly lit, keeping focus on the tattoo.

The ewe has been down in the far pen since before light, and the frost has turned the gate to iron under your glove. Your uncle is in Carlisle with the tractor, the dog is no use in straw, so it is you, a bucket of warm water and two small front feet showing like pale pegs. Your hands are too big for this work. Hers were not.

Nan used to kneel just here, saying the same thing whenever a beast panicked and kicked at the hurdles: be still, and know. You took it for a prayer meant for the animals. Years later she told you it was for whoever was holding on, because a frightened hand makes a frightened birth. So you wait for the next push and pull with it, not against it, counting to twenty the way she taught you while the cold works up through your jeans.
The lamb comes in one long slide, steaming, folded like a wet coat. You rub its ribs with a handful of straw until it shakes its head and sneezes at the rafters. The ewe lifts her face and regards you as though she had always known what you were about.
Afterwards, in the kitchen, you find Nan's stub of pencil in the drawer and chalk the lamb's number on the board by the door. Your hand is steady now. Outside, the sun clears the ridge and the frost on the gate begins to run.
