Fine line script quote on inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black script reads 'be still & know' in a loose handwritten style across the inner forearm, running slightly upward from left to right. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the ink appears dark and crisp against the pale skin. The arm fills the centre of the frame, with a dark background on the left and a black and white striped top on the right.

The cold alarm went off at the third watch, and everyone on Tern ran for the spindle, the way we had been drilled since we were small. Mara was already at the hatch with her lamp clamped in her teeth. I told her to wait. The hiss was only the coolant lines settling, the same as it had done forty times since the Gathering, and the old hands used to say the hull talked more than the crew did.

My grandmother kept a card in her breast pocket, soft as cloth, with three words written in pencil in a hand nobody aboard could match anymore. She said it came from the first keeper, who wrote it inside a sealed case for whoever opened it after him. Be still and know. We all took it for a joke about patience. She never explained it. She only pressed two fingers to the inside of her own wrist when she said it, where the pulse sits.
So I sat down on the deck plates with Mara's shoulder against mine, and we breathed slowly until the hiss dropped beneath the hum. The lamp light lay flat along the ribs of the corridor. Somewhere below us a fault was knitting itself closed, the way the ship had always mended itself, and nothing on the bridge needed us to run.
When we finally stood, Mara said the readings had been wrong all along. I said I knew. We climbed back to the galley and drank the tea the cook had left going cold, and I copied the card out again in my own careless hand and tucked it where my grandmother used to keep hers.
