Fine line script reading if only
Fine line · Colour · Flash
A single continuous fine line script spells out the words if only in cream ink on a flat taupe brown background. The looping strokes have even, thin linework with a long flowing tail that extends to the right beneath the letters. The composition is centred and horizontal, with no body part or skin visible.

The last train had already gone when Ruth found the envelope wedged behind the lost property ledger, its flap licked but never sealed. Inside, on a single sheet torn from a timetable, someone had written two words in a hand so fine it looked like wire drawn across the paper. The ink ran from the i and looped through the o, and then the pen had simply kept going, sweeping out past the margin as though the writer had not wanted to lift it from the page.

She knew the habit of that hand, if not the man. Every Thursday for a year a figure called Tobias Quill had come to the Ashgrove Road ticket office, bought a single to Harrowby, and never boarded. He waited on bench four with a newspaper he did not read, and when the 17.42 pulled out he folded the paper along the same crease and climbed back up the steps into the drizzle. Ruth had stopped asking whether he was all right. She had started saving the crossword for him.
On Thursday she carried the envelope out to bench four and sat with it on her knee. The platform smelled of wet coal dust and hot brakes. She turned the sheet over, expecting more, but the back held only a printed fare table and a coffee ring. Whatever he had meant to say had stopped at those two words, the final stroke still hanging off the edge where the nib had lifted for the last time.
The 17.42 came in with its doors sighing open. Ruth stood, thought of the drizzle and the steps and the crease in the newspaper, and bought a single to Harrowby from the machine by the gate. She did not know if anyone would be waiting at the other end. She only knew that the tail of that line ran further than the page, and that somebody ought to follow it.
