Mr Pryce wanted WELCOME over the bakery door in gold leaf, the way they did it in Leeds, but Vera Lusk had other ideas and most of the street was on her side. So I spent three evenings at the kitchen table with my size zero sable, practising on the backs of delivery dockets until my wrist ached. The loops would not sit still. The B kept collapsing into a bruise and the y wanted to run off the edge of the board like a tram wire going down Hallam Street. My mother sat across from me darning and said the trouble was I was trying to be neat, and nobody's handwriting was neat once they were in a hurry to be kind.

The sign went up on a wet Friday with the ladder propped on the kerb and half the Women's Institute watching from the bus stop. Mr Pryce came out in his apron, read it twice with his lips moving, and asked who had told me to paint something so soft. I said he had, the week before, when he shouted at the delivery boy for dropping a tray. He went red, then laughed in a way I had not heard from him before. At closing he came out to the step with two buns in a paper bag and pressed one into my hand. Be lovely, he said, and I could not tell whether it was an order or a joke until I saw he had put his own exclamation mark on the end of it.
